At carbonbased aviation™, we believe in the human capacity to adapt and mitigate. Solid academic principles from cognitive and social psychology, aviation human factors, and Safety-II methods are at the core of our work. We view the human as a safety buffer whose importance grows as system complexity increases.

We apply Resilience Engineering principles and promote deliberate practice to cultivate expertise through qualitative, meaningful experience; not flight hours alone. We provide guidance, insight, and operational know-how to understand and enhance human performance and the human–machine interface in today’s and tomorrow’s highly automated aircraft.

Our aim is to bridge the gap between academic concepts and operational practice. We combine our academic knowledge in flight safety, human performance, operations management, culture, and pilot training with our front-line experience as line pilots, bringing this integrated academic–operational perspective to you.

That´s human-centered flying expertise™.

The chemical element carbon is the fundamental building block of biological life, forming the structural backbone of every cell, tissue, and organ. As Carl Sagan famously observed, “we are all made of star-stuff,” since the carbon that constitutes our bodies was forged in stellar processes long before life emerged on Earth. In popular culture, Gene Roddenberry later echoed this scientific truth when he referred to humans as “carbon-based units,” a reminder that beneath technology and abstraction, we remain biological beings shaped by physical laws and human limitations, and a comparatively short evolutionary timescale.

The name carbonbased therefore recognises and deliberately places the human at the centre of performance, judgment, and responsibility.

carbonbased aviation™ is an independent aviation consultancy based in Switzerland, focused on flight operations, human performance, and safety systems — partnering with operators and aviation organisations worldwide.

Human Factors and Safety-II methods and processes are at the core of what we do
